Fashion Recipe
Finding the perfect pieces for an outfit is like putting the right amount of salt in your collard greens. If you add too much salt, they’ll be going in the trash face down at the function. If you get it right, everybody and their mama will be asking for the recipe. To ensure my fashion recipe gets 10’s across the board, I use color schemes I find online.
I know this isn’t a new concept but it’s a guaranteed way to win. Of course there are many other elements that help create the perfect look such as; silhouette, fit, texture or patterns. What good do any of those things do if the colors don’t mesh well?
Color Theory: The Painter’s Wheel
Let’s go to art class for second and talk about the basic foundation of the color wheel. According to Britannica, a color wheel is a diagram used in the visual arts to represent the colors of the visible spectrum and their relationship to each other. The first known color wheel was created by Sir Issac Newton in 1666. Colors are divided in to 3 main groups: Primary, Secondary and Tertiary.
The H.B.I.C
All colors are derived from blue, red or yellow which is why they are the primary colors.
Lil Sis
If you mix equal amounts of two primary colors you’ll get secondary colors.
Blue + Yellow= Green
Red + Yellow= Orange
Red + Blue= Violet

The transition between the primary and secondary colors are the tertiary colors. There are 6 in total.
Knowing the basics of color can go such a long way in putting an outfit together. Imagine committing a fashion crime by putting purple and green together. POLICE!! I kid, I kid. lol
Testing the Theory
For color scheme inspiration, I like to use Coolors, Pinterest or Canva. These 3 websites never let me down. First, I start by choosing one item of my wardrobe and build my entire look around it. For my 1st look, I chose the orange pony hair Brandon Blackwood Victoria Clutch. My amazing girlfriend bought me this handbag because she knows I probably wouldn’t have pulled the trigger on purchasing it for myself. I own a few Brandon Blackwood handbags but this one by far is my favorite.

The Outfit
I was running errands this day so I decided to keep the look simple, comfortable and fun. I wish I could share the link to the Antonio Melani cashmere sweater but I bought it on sale at Dillard’s for $45. For cashmere, it was a complete steal! The skirt was thrifted from Goodwill a few years ago and it’s a piece I’ll never get rid of.

The Outfit
It was Sunday Funday for my 2nd look, so I decided to play with patterns and mix it up. I thrifted this iconic Hockey Canada jersey from the Rose Bowl Flea Market a few years ago. I honestly LOVE adding jerseys to my wardrobe. I think it elevates any look and gives it an edge.
As you may have noticed, balloon skirts have been all the rage within this last year. I made my own cherry balloon skirt from some fabric I had left over from a previous project. It was incredibly simple to make so I’ll probably make more this summer. I have an Instagram video with details of how I created it.
Will you be using the color wheel to create your next outfit or have you already been using it? Let me know in the comments.
